Audio notification in Mcabber

I've already talked about Mcabber in Command Line for Dummies a few days ago. Now one thing that is different in Mcabber from most GUI software is the lack of an obvious feature, and that is audio notification. GUI jabber clients will usually have such a feature, but being a console app, Mcabber offers a far more powerful facility for doing practically any type of notification, and much, much more. Actually, it is so powerful it's ridiculous.

Simple command line organizer using cal and when

I'm not one of those people who use organizers extensively, but I do appreciate a quick and dirty entry into a calendar. The easier it is for me to make an entry, the more effective it is. Since I'm also mostly using the "black screen" called terminal, I also wanted an app (or a collection thereof) that would allow me to do so.

While I was thinking of writing a simple Python script, I've discovered that someone's already done the dirty work for me. Someone, who obviously thinks like me.

Arch Linux gateway and server (part 3)

Last time I showed you how I set up dnsmasq and OpenSSH. Now we'll take a look at setting up Shorewall. Well, actually, I've already set it up, and now I'm writing this from my notebook behind the firewall. I accidentally closed my browser the first time I was writing this tutorial, and I've lost everything I was typing in while I was actually setting up the Shorewall. Some details might be missing from this article because of that... if you notice something, or it doesn't work for you, please e-mail me using the contact form.

Arch Linux gateway and server (part 2)

Last time I blogged about my idea of setting up a gateway / server system for a home LAN using Arch Linux. I've set up the base system and GNOME, cleaned up all packages I didn't need, and left the wireless router connected to the modem so that all systems on the LAN can access the Internet while I'm setting up the gateway.

The next thing I'm going to do is set up dnsmasq and openssh. At this point, I will rewire the wireless router to my gateway system, and connect the modem to the other ehternet interface on my gateway.

Arch Linux gateway and server (part 1)

Linuces are being deployed as production servers in many companies. It is a powerful and reliable solution (although, IMVHO, probably not as secure and robust as OpenBSD or FreeBSD, depending on the role). However, if you own a consumer-grade rig, and are running a small home LAN, there is probably no better solution.

Somewhere in November, I volunteered to create some identity pieces for the awesome window manager. awesome is:

[...] is a floating and tiling window manager initialy based on a dwm code rewriting. It's extremely fast, small, dynamic and awesome

as the website says. After haf a year since I did the logo and website header, I'm finally using it, and let me tell you... It's AWESOME!

Solving Aptana Studio 1.x and Firefox 2.x issue

I reinstalled Aptana Studio today to see if the internal preview issue was fixed somehow. It wasn't. I don't know why, but they simply put it down to bad browser configuration on the host system(s) (in our case, Linuces).

After some reading, I found a solution.

Announcing ArStudio Live Linux Distibution for DTP and Design

Great news for some, maybe. I have begun work on constructing a fully featured Live distribution based on Arch Linux, which would contain tools and resources for graphic designers, photographers, DTP technicians, and web designers.

Arch Linux and its Superior Performance

There is much talk about Arch Linux and its superior performance compared to other operating systems, not just Windows, but also other Linuces and whatnot. After a bit of a Linux-free spell, I had a chance to feel the performance difference again.

Ark Linux and Arch Linux

I was just reading the interview that KDEmod team gave for Gazeta Linux. At one time, one of the maintainers, dunkelstern, says:

I wanted to try Arklinux when I downloaded Arch by mistake, and now I am stuck, never tried Ark though.
