The Gimp vs Photoshop: JPEG compression

One of the stranges things in the Gimp (among other many, many strange things) is the way JPEG compressions values work. Well, actually, I'm sure there are pretty good explanations for the way it works, but coming from a Photoshop environment, it might be a bit scary to look at all those options in the 'save as JPEG' dialogue. Fortunately, I did come accross some pretty logical explanations.

I remember how, when I first saw it, I didn't know quite what to make of it. Changing the values form one to another didn't necessarily make the file smaller (or better-looking, for that matter). And a week or so ago, I finally discovered what it was all about.

In the Gimp's community blog Raphaël Quinet explained how Photoshop JPEG compression parameters mapped to the Gimp JPEG dialogue values. Of course, it didn't make the dialogue less confusing, but it sure helps to know a bit more about it...
