Ark Linux and Arch Linux

I was just reading the interview that KDEmod team gave for Gazeta Linux. At one time, one of the maintainers, dunkelstern, says:

I wanted to try Arklinux when I downloaded Arch by mistake, and now I am stuck, never tried Ark though.

Heheh, exactly the same thing happened to me. I was looking at Ark Linux' website. After a bit of Slackware madness with compiling packages manually and hunting down dependencies, I was already growing very tired, and wanted a Linux distribution that was easy to maintain.

The Ark Linux website says:

Ark Linux is a Linux distribution for everyone - designed to be easy to install and learn for users without prior Linux (or computer) experience, while powerful enough for longtime Linux users.

So I reviewed the list of packages they supplied and saw it shipped pretty fresh packages (which is quite important to me). So I said, okay, let's give it a spin. A few minutes later I was interrupted with some urgent task, so I kill firefox, go about my own business, return, and type in Arch instead of Ark. Well, it kind of sounded the same in my head. (I don't know about native English speakers, but for people in Europe, it is not impossible.)

Still not getting it I placed the Arch Linux install CD into the tray and booted. Can you imagine the shock? I expected a neat and easy-to-use graphical installer and I got ncurses-based hell I never asked for! :D

After two failed install attempts I was getting ready to toss the CD into the garbage bin labeling it as a 'First Linux I was NOT able to install on my box'. Then I found the wonderful Installation guide on Arch Linux homepage. That got me up and running in about 20 minutes and introduced me to the basics of system maintenance. I remember going like: 'Hoo, so THAT is what Linux is about!' It was truly one enlightening experience.

Ever since that time (I forgot when it was), I'm on Arch on-and-off for about a year now.

Now I wonder how many people Ark Linux made into loyal Arch converts. :)
